What the cleric list covers
105 spells from cantrip up to 9th-level, including 7 cantrips, and leaning on 24 abjuration and 18 evocation, with 63 more across other groups. The school mix is the fastest way to read a class: it tells you whether the class solves problems by damage, by control, by information or by changing the situation, and therefore what the rest of the party still has to cover.
How this list plays
The cleric list is the game's broadest support toolkit: healing, condition removal, buffs, radiant damage and a strong set of divinations. Its defining property is that it covers problems no other class can — restoring the dead, curing disease and lifting curses — which makes a cleric the class whose absence a party notices most.
What to pick
Resist the pull towards healing spells. In-combat healing is usually less efficient than preventing the damage or ending the fight faster, and out-of-combat healing is handled better by hit dice and rests. Take the condition-removal spells, one good concentration buff and one area control option, and let the domain spells supply the theme.
Common questions
- How many Cleric spells are in the D&D 5e SRD?
- The SRD Cleric list has 105 spells across all levels. The SRD is the free subset of the rules, so the Player's Handbook list is longer.
- Can a Cleric learn spells from another class's list?
- Not by default. A few subclasses, feats and features grant access to spells outside the class list, and the bard's Magical Secrets is the broadest example. Otherwise you are limited to what appears on your own list.
- How many spells can a Cleric have prepared or known?
- That is set by the class table and your level, not by this list. Classes that prepare spells can change the selection after a long rest; classes that know spells swap them only at level up. Check the class progression for the exact numbers.
