What the wizard list covers
204 spells from cantrip up to 9th-level, including 14 cantrips, and leaning on 38 transmutation and 37 evocation, with 129 more across other groups. The school mix is the fastest way to read a class: it tells you whether the class solves problems by damage, by control, by information or by changing the situation, and therefore what the rest of the party still has to cover.
How this list plays
The wizard has the largest spell list in the game and the ability to prepare a different selection each day, which makes preparation itself the class feature. A wizard who knows what tomorrow holds is the most adaptable character in D&D; one who does not is a generalist with too many options. The list is deep in control, utility and ritual casting.
What to pick
Learn broadly and prepare narrowly. Keep rituals in the book rather than in prepared slots, since they cost nothing to cast. For prepared spells, cover four jobs: area damage, single-target control, movement or escape, and whatever the day specifically requires. The wizard's advantage is not raw power — it is having the right spell, which only works if you gather information first.
Common questions
- How many Wizard spells are in the D&D 5e SRD?
- The SRD Wizard list has 204 spells across all levels. The SRD is the free subset of the rules, so the Player's Handbook list is longer.
- Can a Wizard learn spells from another class's list?
- Not by default. A few subclasses, feats and features grant access to spells outside the class list, and the bard's Magical Secrets is the broadest example. Otherwise you are limited to what appears on your own list.
- How many spells can a Wizard have prepared or known?
- That is set by the class table and your level, not by this list. Classes that prepare spells can change the selection after a long rest; classes that know spells swap them only at level up. Check the class progression for the exact numbers.
