The undead in the SRD
The 20 undead here span CR 1/4 to CR 21, so the type covers several tiers of play — 16 medium-sized and 3 large-sized, with 1 more across other groups. Size matters more than the type label in practice, because it decides reach, grappling and how many of them fit in a corridor. Running undead
Undead are the most mechanically distinct type to fight because so many of the game's usual levers do not apply: no charm, no fright, no poison, no exhaustion, and no morale. They never flee, which means undead encounters always run to their conclusion. Against that, clerics and paladins have abilities aimed squarely at them, so undead fights swing hard on party composition.
What they need from you
The interesting question with undead is never whether they attack but why they are still here. An unresolved wrong, a broken promise, a grave disturbed. That gives the party something to do other than fight, which matters because the fight itself has no off-ramp. Undead also pair well with horror pacing — they are at their best approaching slowly through a space the party cannot leave.
